When Family or Friends are Conspiracy Theorists

What do we do?

When Family or Friends are Conspiracy Theorists

This is another difficult situation that many of us may find ourselves in. Most of the time we can usually just turn a blind eye to much of the issue. As long as it doesn’t really harm anyone, que sera sera.

However, we now have the unfortunate luck of finding ourselves in an unbelievable, and worsening, nightmare from which we simply cannot wake. And the Conspiracy Theorists are not helping matters.

So, what to do? Unfortunately, individually, I don’t think there is much that can be done. Conspiracy Theorists (CT) do not listen to reason, do not listen to credible/verifiable facts, and cherry-pick information in order to support a particular view or belief contrary to all (often overwhelming) other evidence.

One on one, few will make any progress when in discussion with a CT. Most CT’s will dig in their heels when challenged and the harder they’re pushed, the more resolute their certainty. We now live in a time where any (and I mean ANY) outlandish idea that can be conceived, a support group can be found to encourage the cause.

However, as mentioned earlier, we now live in dangerous times. Humoring CT’s I don’t think should be condoned anymore. But, can any actual positive progress be made in this arena? I’m not sure, simply because the solution requires large group cooperation, and that is something in rare supply these days.

I believe the solution would require a societal shift, and this is probably unlikely. Society needs to stop falling for, often willingly, clickbait. Stop following the forum/comment trolls into their dungeons. Stop responding to the video that was sent simply to piss you off.

More people need to understand we are being driven by completely uncaring algorithms. This is also fueling the CT’s views. These algorithms are directed by people/organizations interested in only one thing. Money, not unity. A united population is difficult to manipulate. The manipulation may be nefarious, it is possible after all. But I think, more likely, or at least mostly, it’s simply profit driven with no other worldly consideration beyond that one simple point of view.

Unfortunately the effects of this profit driven view feed right into the CT’s greatest desire, the perception of a conspiracy.
