I Love My Technology
But we should probably strive for a simpler life, where we can

Tech, gadgets, gizmos, shiny blinky flashy things! They’re usually fun and exciting, for a while. Then we often get bored and start looking for the next trinket to occupy our attention.
The tech explosion we are currently living through is unlike anything we’ve experienced before. We are accelerating into the future, and we’re unable to see if there’s a brick wall just up ahead.
Several years ago, when my son was still a teenager, he asked me a question about something or other. The question isn’t relevant and I also don’t remember what it was. My response on the other hand, I do remember. He had been surfing Snapchat or something similar most likely when he asked his question. I told him to hold up his hand and to then look at it holding his phone. I said he held virtually the sum total of all the world's knowledge, in the palm of his hand.
My initial intention was to encourage him to find the answer himself. Later, I realized my response had a much, much deeper meaning. At no other time in human history has an individual had access to so vast a store of information.
I also just read an article in which Ray Kurzweil (scientist and futurist) recently predicted the technology singularity will happen around the year 2045. That’s not too far away, a mere 21 years or so. Of course it may not happen, but if it does…
Regardless, tech may be great and it certainly has its place in our daily lives. But I think there are few out there who do not appreciate the value of unplugging for a while. Do it while you can, soon it may no longer be an option.
If you’ve ever felt the tug between loving your tech and wishing for a simpler life, you’re not alone. The future is coming fast, but the choice to pause is still in our hands. Take a moment to unplug, reflect, and decide how much control you’re willing to give away. If this resonates with you, share it, leave a comment, or subscribe to join the conversation.
