Carhartt's & Courvoisier, 1?
Where rugged and refined coincide.

I like both of these. I never really thought of the odd combination though. Not until an acquaintance one day pointed out what I was wearing and drinking, we all thought it was moderately entertaining and had a small laugh. Later, as I thought more about the seemingly odd combination, the more I liked it.
Rugged, durable, strong (less so these days), dependable. (How I think we should be.)
Refined, elegant, sophisticated, polished. (How I think we should, in addition, aspire to? Maybe.)
Contradictory? I don’t think so. Complimentary? Yes, I do think so. These are not mutually exclusive traits but instead, mutually complementary.
What good is a block of steel or a large solid rock? These might have basic useful traits but that’s about it.
How about a Fabergé egg? Beautiful but extremely fragile, don’t let your three-year-old near it!
Consider for example ancient marble buildings, something Roman or Greek perhaps. The columns and buildings are mesmerizing and awe-inspiring. The strong, solid, and dependable stone combined with the elegant, beautiful, and sophisticated carvings and engineering designs are what speak deeply to our souls.

This is an introductory post of this concept. My intention is this may be the first of a category or series of occasional future posts. Not about Carhartt’s or Courvoisier specifically, but about things, issues, or concepts that fall under this heading and are worth discussion, mention, or are simply of interest, in this category.
For now, I think this will be a Wednesday sub-category type of post. For those who haven’t read the “About” section, Wednesday posts are written well in advance and then scheduled in the Substack queue to automatically post later, sometimes months later, on Wednesday’s, usually at 1AM.
