Can We Really Turn This Train Wreck Around?

Can We Really Turn This Train Wreck Around?

By TLS

Society seems like a day-after-day, never-ending, continuous train wreck anymore. Am I the only one who thinks or sees this?

Sometimes I feel like we’re stuck in a nightmare from which it is impossible to wake. People keep screaming ‘No! We don’t want this!’ but we keep barreling down the same tracks, unable to change course.

How is this happening? If one were prone to conspiracy theorist tendencies, this would be like mainlining crack cocaine, heroin, and meth all at the same time. Are we actually being directed by someone or some group? Possibly, but probably in only small more ephemeral ways.

Instead, I think we are probably living more a ‘Perfect Storm’ situation. All the elements to create a colossal shit show are coinciding at this time and place, and we all get to reap what we’ve sewn. For better, or for much, much worse.

In the science-leaning pop-culture arena there are a couple terms: The Fermi Paradox and The Great Filter.

The Fermi Paradox simply gives label to the fact there are no other observable civilizations in the universe. The Great Filter provides one explanation. Many argue the Great Filter is behind us. However, observing the world today can easily encourage one to believe that filter may still lie ahead. Perhaps not too far ahead.

The old proverb ‘…may you live in interesting times…’ may be more apt than we would like to believe. Do we live in interesting times? It seems to me we most certainly have been saddled with that burden to bear. Will we get through this particular filter? Who knows, only time will tell. Although, perhaps this is just the warm up. Maybe in fifty years, or a hundred years, or five hundred years, (if there’s anyone still around) they’ll look back on us and smirk at how bad we ‘thought’ we had it.

If you made it this far, you’re not just watching the wreck, you’re trying to understand it. That matters. The train only changes course if enough of us lean into the shift. So here’s my ask: share this, comment your perspective, and keep the conversation alive. Because silence is the only guaranteed way to crash.
