A Strange Thing Happened While Filling Out My Ballot

I’m writing this the morning of the election. It will post, most likely, within a few weeks. But the time of posting isn’t really relevant other than voting is currently on everyone’s mind at the moment.

In my 30-plus years of voting I can confidently say that I overwhelmingly voted Republican. I have never been a party member and I occasionally voted independent. I can’t say that I never voted for a Democrat, but if I did, it was rare.

Several days ago I filled out my mail-in ballot. When finished, I noticed every candidate I voted for was a Democrat. It was not because they were great or that I particularly liked their stance on something. No, far from that. The reason my votes turned out that way was because every time I looked at a Republican candidate, it felt like voting for a Nazi.

Both parties have their extreme wings and both parties are trying to pull everyone to their respective ends. But lately the Republicans have really started to sound like early 1930s pre-Nazis

The far left has become just as nuts but the difference I think is in the danger level. I’m not particularly worried the far left will overthrow the government in some sort of coup. I cannot say the same about the Republicans, especially the Trump Republicans. To borrow a phrase, I believe they represent a clear and present danger to the legitimate continuation of a free and democratic United States.

Unbelievably, half the country seems to think the exact opposite. It’s mind-boggling.

If Harris wins, the election nightmare will not be over. Trump will never concede the election and he will rally his supporters and whip them into a fervor. If Trump wins, the election nightmare will be over. Unfortunately the real nightmare for the world will just be starting.

God only knows what will happen then. Hopefully we can all survive this, and hopefully the nation can as well. Because without the United States, China and Russia will become the world leaders. I can’t envision any scenario where that would be good.

I hope beyond hope that my view of the next few years is wrong. I hope that after a short time of shake-up people can start settling down and try to come together. I hope this free and democratic society will continue. I hope what I see coming, is wrong.
